Bush South – McConnell West Hills
All of the routes in the Bush Lake area are informal tracks that require some navigation. Longer routes can be snowshoed by linking one track with another, going over ridges or through the forest. The double marshes on the southwest end of the area between the Coquihalla Highway and the Lac le Jeune Road can be accessed through a gate on an access road. A double track can be followed which loops around a ridge to a marshy area between two hills. On a fine winter day I linked up the loop by climbing over a ridge close to the fenceline (and some side routes) for a 4 km loop.
Some of the area has been logged, but a few older douglas firs were left, standing above the rest of the forest.
The low winter sun shone through a few clouds as I stomped through open areas in the forest.
Recent snowfall had covered all the trees, but there was also a hoar frost layer on the branches.
When we are breaking trail in the high country, we keep the routes a bit shorter since it is hard work. It all seems a bit easier though when we are out in mild temperatures and some sunshine,
Tracks are now set for this loop, ready for others to follow.
