Brussels Hills Loop
The Brussels Hills are unnamed on maps, but they are a line of open forested rocky hills above Brussels Lake and Brussels Creek between Tobiano – the TransCanada Highway and the forested slopes of Mt. Fehr to the south. We often hike nearby in the upper Six Mile Hills and the access road is the same for both. Just past the turnoff to Tobiano is a left turn onto the Pat Lake (Six Mile) Road, a popular fishing destination. This side road was the old TransCanada Highway which wound up past the lakes and down the Tunkwa Lake Road to Savona. When the highway was improved a new route was cut through the bluffs at Six Mile Point and the former road was left to ranchers and fishermen. Patches of asphalt still remain on the roadway as it climbs the hill. At a fenceline halfway up the slope, a left turn heads up into the hills. We took that turn and parked on the other side of the gate. We then hiked southeast along the hills.
The route started in open grasslands near a set of corrals. In late fall there was no livestock in the area.
We climbed over the top of each hill on a cold sunny day.
There are no trails over the hills and so we looked for the easiest route, winding out to viewpoints of Kamloops Lake below and Red Plateau beyond.
We also found views northeast to Kamloops Lake and the Dewdrop Range.
On this late November cold day we chose not to climb the last one in the chain of hills and instead wound down to the double track along the shores of Brussels Lake.
We followed a series of double tracks and single tracks back, passing by a number of ponds.
The loop route was 8.6 km and took about 3 hours. Going over all the hills was hard work, but it was an easy hike on the way back. We saw more options for future hikes in the area so we will plan a return hike to the Brussels Hills in spring.
