Hoodoos Rim Trail
The Hoodoos Trail is now a trail in the Nature Trust of B.C., located nor far from Fairmont, B.C. A short hike goes from the trailhead to a viewpoint, then a short loop can be walked before returning. A rim trail, though, has been in place for much longer. It skirts the edge of the bluffs and goes past the Nature Trust property into adjacent Nature Conservancy of Canada lands. The rim trail is right at the edge of a number of drop-offs, not the best choice for everyone. I enjoyed the winding trail and even scrambled out to a few ridges. Anyone who does this is taking a risk, so experience in scrambling helps and caution is needed. This would not be good route in wet or icy conditions. I hiked out for about 3.4 km then returned by a more direct route.
A few conifers and junipers grew on the edge of the hoodoos.
Beyond to the south is Columbia Lake, the source of the Columbia River.
Ragged hoodoos overlook the valley for 2 km.
The rim trail winds along the edge of the bluffs with new views around each corner.
I spotted two places where I could scramble down and then back up if I had more time (I had people waiting for me as it turned out). Some of the small canyons invited exploration, but that will have to wait for another visit.
At the end of the “goat trail” the path leads into the end of the hoodoos on a west bearing descending into the forest, a good spot to turn around. The Hoodoos Rim Trail is a fun route to explore while staying in the Rocky Mountain Trench area.
