On Sunrise Mountain
We had planned a hike to the crest of the Monashees, but the weather was marginal so we made a last minute decision to do a local hike instead. We drove out to Barnhartvale then up Todd Road and then Ronde Lane, parking at the end. We hiked up the steep Sunrise Mountain Trail, straight up the ridge to the summit, then went down the back side to do a loop route that we knew for a 4.7 km hike.
We had an early start and so the sun was still low in the sky in the east as we climbed the ridge.
The route features fine views in 3 directions. It was a cloudy day, but some blue skies broke through to our west as we looked down the South Thompson River Valley.
The top of Sunrise Mountain is a bit lower than Mount Peter, 9.6 km to the northwest.
The loop route on the back and west side requires some route-finding, but we have added some flagging tape to assist hikers. This is a good hike that we have done in every season and one we recommend, but it is a steep hike, one that will test your heart, lungs, and legs.
