Wounded Knee Trail
The Lundbom Grasslands Commonage area is a gem for hikers. We have been hiking there for decades, but with the rise of mountain biking new single track trails have been added that make good hiking trails too. Some of them are shown as dashed blue lines on the map. The white dashed lines are double tracks. On our last visit to the area we did the Cocobonk Trail, a loop to the northeast side. On a day in early June, we did the Wounded Knee Trail, an 11.3 km loop on the northwest side of the area.
The trail goes from Lundbom Lake over to the shores of Hamilton Lake, then climbs into the hills through open grasslands, then mixed forest.
Sugarloaf Mountain at 1336m (4475 ft.) is the high point of the area. We hiked around the peak on the way back.
The trails wind through a variety of ecological zones, including aspen groves and wetlands.
Some of the intersections are signed, but secondary ones may not be. We carried a map and a GPS to stay on track, but we ended up doing an extra loop since the group got ahead of the navigator.
Along the way were a variety of wildflowers, one of the highlights of hiking in spring.
The final section of the trail wound through open grassland hills to a point north of Sugarloaf Mountain, then we worked our way around the peak to the east side before descending.
We hiked down a double track to Hamilton Lake to close the loop then continued to where we had parked at Lundbom Lake.
This is a favorite hike every year. We will be back in autumn to enjoy fall colors.
