Painted Bluffs Impressions
In 2018 we hiked into Painted Bluffs Provincial Park twice. We explore the area most years, some of them arriving by kayak, launching from Tobiano or Savona. Most visitors only go to the foot of the weathered bluffs, but we have hiked and scrambled up and down the ridges and the gullies for a variety of views. Although the painted bluffs are surrounded by grassland hills and some rocky cliffs, the main area of the park has an otherworldy feel to it. On a bright and sunny day, the colors stand out and the shadows help to define the wrinkled contours of the spines, narrow corrugated ribs, wrinkled fans, rough channels, and erosion gullies. Photos never seem to do justice to the real experience so the following photos are an attempt to recapture some of the impressions I had, spiced by my own emotional responses, and some visual memories.
