The Marshes Between
In the McConnell Lake – Stake Lake area there is a large marsh that spans the space between the Coquihalla Highway and the Lac le Jeune Road. There has been an access road off the Lac le Jeune Road for a number of years, but it now has a cattle guard so access to the doubletrack and to the marshes area is now easier. I hiked it in the fall and returned in the middle of winter to snowshoe across the marshes.
This is a good spot in winter to snowshoe across the open spaces of the marshlands. Click an image for a caption and a larger (lightbox) image.
Strangely enough, there is an old homestead on the shores of the marsh. I would guess it was a trapper’s cabin. There is also a large outbuilding next to it.
The area around the marshes has been logged recently, but there are a few large standing douglas firs still on the hillside above, a welcome sight in cutblock country.
