Hull Hill Snowshoe
When winter snows blanket the hills we head to to various locations to snowshoe. Well-established locations like Stake Lake, Sun Peaks, and Bush Lake/Dogwood Marshes are often our first choice, but then we go to secondary routes when conditions are right. We first starting exploring Hill Hill decades ago, running and hiking the old double tracks on the north and west side. We have also linked up Dogwood Marshes to the southwest side of Hull Hill, although this is a long route for most winter days. With so little snow in December and January we did not venture out to Hull Hill until mid-February in 2019. We drove up the Lac le Jeune Road and turned onto the Goose Lake Road. A short drive of 400m took us to a side road with a cattleguard crossing. We parked there.
This Sunday was a sunny and cold day as we stomped the snow bearing south toward the winter sun.
Not far off the double track is an old cabin. Jack Booth lived there until his later years and it has been vacant ever since. Each year when we visit it is a little more dilapidated.
The wide double track goes through replanted blocks where the aspens stand tall above the younger pines.
The bright sun shone through the tall bare aspens and shorter snow-mantled aspens as we climbed the hill.
Higher up, we have gone to wider views. Looking north, Dunn Peak was visible, standing above all of the hills 105 km away.
We will return to snowshoe Hull Hill again. It is one of our top 20 areas to snowshoe and there are several other route options for each time we stomp on the slopes.
