Frozen Falls on the Red Plateau Escarpment
In the winter the streams that run off the south side of the top of Red Plateau will freeze up. I have found 4 frozen waterfalls recently and I am still exploring to look for more. One of the more interesting falls is a 1.1 km scramble into a deep canyon near the Dewdrop Arch, but below Castle Butte. There is no trail and the upper part is quite rough, especially in winter. I parked near the junction of the upper and the lower (Frederick) Dewdrop roads. The route is up the gully to the right. It was a foggy day so I used a rough bearing and just hoped for the best.
There are some steep ridges on either side of the gully but they were more open so it was a better choice to go up the ridges then drop into the gully.
On the way up the gully someone has put together a makeshift shelter using the alcove between two large volcanic boulders.
The upper part of the gully is on rock and steep talus slopes requiring some scrambling and careful route selection. I couldn’t see the falls until I was within the last 100 metres.
I went right to the bottom of the falls to enjoy seeing the details of the ice on the rock. Some water was flowing down the left side of the falls with the mild weather,
This would be a better hike on a sunny day at the end of winter so when there is less ice on the rocks in the gully, a return to the gully would be interesting (possibly late March). Coming back down was not easy, but once the route was off the rock, it was an easier walk back through the open forest and grassland slopes.
