A Mesa Morning
We hiked on the west end of Mt. Dufferin early in the morning, parking past the Kamloops Regional Correctional Center and hiking up the Pipeline Trail, then the Sunset Trail, the Mesa Trail, Lava Flow Lookout, then back by the Ponderosa Trail, a 6.45 km loop route.
From the end of the Sunset Trail (1.4 km), we enjoyed the views west across the rocky hills to Kamloops Lake.
By the end of June the dry hills no longer have spring wildflowers, but we came across a hot weather/summer group of wildflowers in areas where the taller varieties of summer grasses and alfalfa have not covered the slopes.
A section of this area is called Blowdown Alley with has many many beetle-killed ponderosa pines.
A few snags still stand on rocky promontories overlooking the Thompson River Valley.
A prop plane flew low over the hills, breaking the quiet peace of the trails.
We enjoyed stopping at the viewpoint on the Lava Flow Lookout Trail before looping back to complete our route.
This quiet end of Kenna Cartwright Park takes about 1.4 hours to hike. When we choose to go out on the Mesa Trail early in the morning, we see few other hikers, runners, or mountain bikers. This moderate route is a favorite and we will be back in the fall do it again.
