Mount Mara Area
Some of the best hiking in the whole Kamloops area is found around Mount Mara. There are only 3 established routes. The Mara Canyon Trail goes up the south side through the hoodoo canyon and can be combined with the Ridge Trail to make a 7 km loop.
The Mara Trail is a 4 km loop on the lower southwest flanks of Mount Mara. A double track goes along the west side of Mara into Pruden Pass then winds up tot he summit area, a longer route. But there are many other possible routes, some of which are show on the interactive map included here. Links to more information and photos are embedded into this Google map:
Mara Canyon Notes:
- Most hikers park on Tranquille Road and cross the tracks, but this is an illegal crossing so hikers are encouraged to use the level crossing at Ord Road, then turn left and park near the end of the bumpy road.
- the trail is also called the Cinnamon Ridge Trail or the Hoodoos Trail.
- There are signs at the bottom, but not farther up. The route into the canyon is not easy to spot. Continue uphill alongside the canyon past a waterfall area, then drop down through a juniper grove to the bottom of the canyon.
- The Mara Canyon route has some light scrambling and is always a bit rough. It is not suitable for younger children or anyone with fitness or mobility issues.
