Through the Dogwood Marshes
The Dogwood Marshes snowshoe area is an informal trail network adjacent to the Lac le Jeune Road. Parking is at the Bush Lake parking loop km north of McConnell Lake. All of the routes are user-stomped, winding through the Anderson Creek marshes and up through the forest hillside. Routes go all over and it can sometimes be confusing for newcomers, so we bear south through the open areas then wind through the mixed forest inside the fenceline to Teal Pond. From the east side of the pond several trails bear off, but we usually stay to the right, working our way uphill. Loops are possible, but snowshoers can also retrace their tracks if they are unsure. Some of the routes take advantage of backroads, skid tracks, and forest openings. Snowshoers rebuild the tracks each winter to create fun loops, winding through open forests. There are no trail markers or signs, but snowshoers can just follow tracks in the snow, keeping a general sense of the return direction. A tracking app or GPS is good insurance if attempting the upper loops. We use Geotracker for Android and find it very reliable. Many mountain bikers and other snowshoers use Strava or Garmin apps. This was a 6 km route on a grey day in January.
The marshes area (full of red ossier dogwood) at the bottom of the area is open and scenic. Above the marshes are some ponds and aspen groves.
At one point we spotted a “pre-hibernation” trail marker on one of the trees:
There are a number of articles on this website providing more information on snowshoeing in the Dogwood Marshes. Here are a few photos from some recent outings on these routes.
