Mount Perry Traverse
Mount Perry rises to 1729m (5672 feet) above the lowest point in North America, the Death Valley Basin. It is in the rugged Black Mountains on the east side of Death Valley. The best access point is to take the Dante’s View Road and then from the parking lot continue to bear north following the tops of all the ridges.
Below the trail/route was the below-sea-level Badwater Basin. The Panamint Mountains rise above the salt flats to the west.
There was a faint path that wounds its way on top of the barren ridges toward Mount Perry.
Across the valley 32 km distant was the summit of 11 048 foot Telescope Peak in the Panamint Mountains.
Below in the Basin were salt ponds and wet basins still full at the end of February.
The final approach to Mount Perry was a steep ridge that climbed around a colorful rocky ridge.
With people waiting for me back at Dante’s View, I turned around to make it an 11km return hike, not doing the final summit of Mount Perry (although I wanted to), but satisfied with a fine hike on top of the Black Mountains in Death Valley National Park.
