Herald Trails
One of our finest park campsites is Herald Provincial Park. It has a well-designed campsite, with long beaches, fine trails, and lots of forest for both privacy and noise-buffering. For hikers too, there are a number of trails to explore.
The premier trail is the short walk to Margaret Falls. The trail follows the gorge up past old-growth cedars with some small cascades.
Margaret Falls is the highlight as it tumbles down the rock to a pool at the end of the trail.
There are upper falls too, accessible from side trails on the Reinecker Creek trail system.
We followed the west side trails up through the forest for a few hours. We spotted a few late-season flowers in bloom.
The upper Reinecker creek Trails follow the creek upstream towards White Lake and it is possible to create a loop of up to 20 km, but we find these trails little dull.
The west side on the slopes of Bastion Mountain has been logged and the signage seems to be “off” every time we go there. The east side trails are nicer but it is still a forest walk with some limited views of a creek. We can’t recommend it, except as good exercise.
Instead, hike to Margaret Falls then walk along the lakeshore within the park.
