Neskonlith Meadows Wildflowers
Every spring, we drive through Chase, stopping in at the Band Office on Shuswap Road for a permit, then we drive up the Bear-Loakin Road to the Neskonlith Meadows trailhead. The hike up to Star Lake and back is about 10km, but it is the spring wildflower display that brings us to the area. We just follow the double track up the ridge and enjoy the display. Early in April yellow glacier lilies dominate the open slopes.
Bluebells were out too, a rarer occurrence for the drier areas of the Interior.
Arrow-leafed balsam root succeeds the early display and covers all the south-facing slopes.
Spring beauties provide white and pink colors to the green slopes.
The flower meadows start right at the trailhead so a short hike will reward the visitor.
Each week brings more emerging varieties. Sedum will bloom in the summer.
Thompsons Paintbrush is hard to spot until the bracts turn yellow-green in spring.
Insects were already feeding on the foliage in early April.
Neskonlith Meadows offers the best early season wildflower display up to the upper grasslands display at the end of May.
