Cornwall Hills
Cornwall Hills Provincial Park lies southwest of Cache Creek and Ashcroft. Cornwall Mountain is 6880 feet high. Access is from Highway 1, 7.5 km south of Ashcroft. Turn west onto the Hat Creek Forest Road and follow it up into the hills for 13km. The junction between Oregon Jack Provincial Park and Cornwall Hills is well-signed. The road up to the top is 8.7 km each way and can be driven with a high clearance vehicle, but we chose to hike up and back.
The route starts in forest, but opens up on the ridge. Grassy meadows and abundant wildflowers flank the road. Views extend south and west, but haze from the fire near Lytton obscured the details.
The top part of the mountain was all meadows, and 360 degree views were offered to the Marble Range, the Coast Range, the Scarped Range, and the Interior Plateau.
On top of the mountain was an old Forestry Lookout, a small pond, and meadows inviting exploration.
A good variety and an abundance of wildflowers lined our route from bottom to the top and back again.
Although this is a long route to hike, it is a good steady climb on an old Forest Service Road, gaining 857m in elevation (2811 feet) over the distance. When we return we will pick a sunny, clear day to enjoy the wide-ranging views from the top.
