Sunrise to Pratt
Sunrise Mountain is one of the premier hikes of our area and it starts right in town, at the end of Ronde Lane in Barnhartvale (more info – article). One of the best things about the hike are the multiple trailheads along the route.
The trail follows the edge of the ridge, climbing south to the top. There are now trail markers all the way up the north ridge route.
Early views are down the South Thompson River Valley, but as we get higher, views also extend east and northeast.
On this recent hike, we went over the top and down the back side to another viewpoint we call GMS Hill (at N50 38.466 W120 111.160). It offers additional views of the hills around Barnhartvale, Rose Hill, Campbell Creek and beyond.
It is possible to continue south and end up at the end of Pratt Road. There are double tracks that go all the way, but the main one we want now goes through a short section of private (grazing land) property. It appears that we can stay east of the fenceline to avoid this short section, but this will take additional exploration to scout out. The wildflowers were out on this last outing.

Sunrise Mountain (also referred to as Middle Mountain) is one we will do every year. It is steep (1500 feet of elevation gain), but not too long. From the end of Ronde Lane to the top and back the same way is only 4.5km. Pick a nice day, bring a lunch, and enjoy the hike.
