Disdero Lakes
The Disdero Lakes are found in the Robbins Range area in a large grasslands basin. The lakes lie in an east-west crescent for 3km. Side roads come in from the Robbins Range Road on either side ending in private property.
Although fishing sites list Disdero Lakes as fishing lakes, we could not find any information on access so we walked along the transmission line to the shores of Little Disdero Lake (above). There were fences, but gates were all open to the lake. Streams ran in to Little Disdero and the grass and forest shorelines were pleasant places for a walk.
Disdero Lake is larger, but the lake levels seemed to be down, judging by the shoreline and the water quality. The lake seemed muddy and an unlikely place to go fishing.
Disdero Lakes would be nice loop hike but private property surrounds the lake. Only the hills to the north are Crown lands and those have Crown Grazing leases on them so are not suitable for exploration when cattle are out.
When we see lakes like this on the map, we are interested in access and we have a desire to go explore them, but there was a vacuum of information on these lakes. Google Earth displays the sideroads and the powerline and we can even see fencelines if the resolution is good for the area. It is only by going to IMap BC and using the Integrated Cadastral Layers that we can check land status.
Nice spots, but it would be best to contact the landowners for permission, especially in cattle season. Those of us who proceed on foot, going quietly, leaving nothing but our footprints, and taking nothing but photos – we pose no threats, but owners also have to deal with ATVs, motorcycles, 4x4s, yahoos, and hunters too. Still, it would be nice for the Crown and Regional Districts to leave a corridor of access to lakes for non-motorized recreational opportunities. Imagine…
