The Upper Grasslands in November
There is a designated parking area for the Lac du Bois Grasslands area for hikers to explore the upper grasslands environment. This elevation is at the upper limit of the sagebrush and at the same time is full of pothole lakes and glacially-shaped moraines. Moderate routes can be taken through the hills at the edge of the snowline. Above, the north-facing sides of ridges retain any early-fallen snowfall.
We followed the plateau lakes over to the largest grasslands esker (link), then down the line of the esker to the north end of Long Lake.
To create a loop route, we climbed the hills overlooking the lake to the highest point for lunch. We looked back north along the lake.
There are only bits and pieces of trails or tracks in the area, so we just created our own trail back to the parking area. A GPS is useful to waypoint the parking area for an efficient return to the start.
