Page Slickrock
Page, Arizona is the city on the Glen Canyon Reservoir in the northwest part of the state. It is located along the highway for anyone wanting to explore the Grand Canyon, the Grand Staircase-Escalante Canyons, Glen Canyon, Vermillion Cliffs and beyond to Zion or Bryce Canyon. There are numerous recreational opportunities. For the one day that I was in Page, I chose two nearby hikes.
In an area of slickrock hills just outside town, I went for a shorter hike from the orange sands of the desert up onto a series of hills.
There are no trails here. Just pick a route and enjoy the sandstone scrambling.
This kind of hiking is pure playtime. In 3 kilometers, I had explored all the group of hills.
These hills are not in any guidebooks. With so many canyons, hills, buttes, and viewpoints, they are just a rocky area off a sideroad. We could hike every day in the southwest for years and never have to repeat a hike.
Page is also one of the prime launch points for boats into the reservoir. When the Colorado River was dammed at Page, it created Lake Powell with over 1900 miles of shoreline. Kayakers can explore the side canyons. At 4 miles/h, it would take 475 hours or about 70 days of paddling to complete the whole circuit! I hope to fit about 10% of this into a future trip.
