Redtailed Hawk Trail
This trail is proably the least hiked in Kenna Cartwright Park. While the new road went in to connect the end of McGill, construction cut off access to the Sage Trail. Once all of the work was complete a new trailhead was built (behind the recycling depot). Hkers can now enjoy the Sage Trail overlooking Mission Flats. At the far end, the Sage Trail drops into a gully and comes up to an old track. This old track was built by the Canadian Navy as part of the Kamloops Naval Ammunition Depot during World War II. A tramway was built from Mission Flats where the pulp mill now sits up to the bunkers. The tram brought ammunition up from the railaroad to the bunkers for storage. A road was used to build and service the tramway. The concrete bases are still there for us to see. The upper one sits in a hollow just west of this track. A lower stanchion sits on the edge of hill lower down.
The Redtailed Hawk Trail follows the old road for short ways northwest, then turns onto the pipeline track south up the flanks of the hills above. This section is steep. It continues south to connect with the Deer Run Trail. One of the reasons it is not hiked much is it is a bit steep for an out and back route and it is not a very satisfying loop since we would have to walk from Home Depot all the way on roads to the end of McGill. Okay for a run or a mountain bike, but not great for a hike.
Razor wire fences prevent any short cuts through to Bunker Road. The route is interesting, though, from a historical perspective with the bunkers, road, fence, and stanchions still there for us to see.
