Zion Canyon is surrounded by sheer red sandtone walls.   A few trails precariously wind up into canyons or onto slickrock ridges.   Roads originate from distant routes and work their way to the edge of escarpments on mesas, still leaving a long trek to the canyon.     Long canyon routes start at remote locations and can be navigated downstream, opportunities for canyoneers.   Scrambling routes start high from a few backroad access points and challenge hikers with backpacking and scrambling routes.   Any off-trail experience will involve scrambling and possibly the need for climbing equipment.   When the slickrock is dry, it offers opportunities for exploration, but a need for caution is always present.   Everywhere we went we saw impressive scenery and we had a strong desire to extend our explorations, but we really needed better equipment and another experienced member to help is through the tricky spots.     Guided activities are not permitted in the park, so we will need to upgrade our own skills and equipment and then network to solicit scrambling partners.     

There are also about 60 canyons to explore, many of which require canyoneeering equipment and skills. Some of these are among the best in the world. Its time to sharpen the skill set, acquire some equipment,and recruit some co-adventurers…
