Upper Grasslands Track
In the early spring this route has many seasonal marshes and ponds. Ducks and grassland birds can be seen along the whole route, 3.7 km each way. In the fall, aspen trees and edge of forest shrubs color the landscape. In winter, the ponds are frozen over, but the open grasslands makes a scenic route with broad views across the hills to the mountains in the distance.
Start at Lac du Bois and follow the track on the east shore, going past the end of the lake and through the gate south, starting in Nature Conservancy of Canada lands and continuing into the Lac du Bois Grasslands Protected Area. The double track stays below the forested slopes of Wheeler Mountain on an old wagon track bearing south.
The route is fairly level and easy to follow. At the 3.6 km mark, the first sagebrush can be seen as the trail starts to drop toward Pruden Pass. We usually go past the fence at this spot, then climb to the top of a hill on the east side for the turn-around viewpoint. In December, this was a good place for a cup of tea, looking across at the snowy peaks of Tod Mountain. .Return by the same route, a pleasant trail in the upper grasslands
