Red Lake
Red Lake is a scenic drive of 40 km from Tranquille, following the Tranquille River through the canyon and then into the uplands area near Criss Creek. Take the turn to Red Lake (Sabiston Creek Road) and continue to Red Lake Drive. There are two places to launch a boat. A small park, parking area, and boat launch has been built at the end of Strom Road. There is also a small boat launch at the south end of the lake.
From the launch, go north past a few hme, then up toward the narrows. Underwater weeds grow throughout the whole lake to a degree not seen in other lakes of the area. In shallow spots, the paddle gets caught in the growth, which sits just below the surface. The lake is long and narrow with 3 islands to explore and shallow marshes in the bays. Other than a handful of fishermen, the lake is very quiet. Sandhill marshes flew overhead, migrating south for the winter. Following the shoreline, the entire loop is about 9km.
The larger island makes a good spot for lunch. A grassy, open hill sits above the lake with good views to the south. An interesting loop route would be to go south from Red Lake, following the Sabiston Creek Road to Savona. It is a good road for most of the year.
