White Lake
The Kamloops area has many lakes and rivers to paddle but some are much better for the self-propelled enthusiast. We try to get to them all, from tiny fishing lakes to the giant resort lakes. The best lakes have few (or no) high-speed motor boats, are big enough for a full workout, have good launch spots, and interesting shorelines. White Lake fits all of these. The full loop is 12km. Much of the shoreline is shallow, with riparian zone vegetation. About one quarter of the lake has homes/docks, but the rest is forested. There is no road around almost half the lake. White Lake will be added to our "A List" of lakes (along with Adams Lake, Kamloops Lake, and Heffley Lake) and will be a yearly return visit. We think that a fall paddle will be our next trip to best to witness the fall colors on the hillsides from the lake.
White Lake is about 50 minutes from Kamloops. Turn onto the White Lake Road at the Balmoral Store and follow the winding road to the small community. There are 3 good launch spots. A community boat launch and park is across the road from the firehall on the north side. White Lake Provincial Campground is along the north shore and has a small launch spot and beach. At the end of the road on the north shore is a small park with a hand launch site.
Dragonflies and damselflies kept the lake free on mosquitoes. The lake was warm for a swim and the water was clear everywhere we paddled. Schools of small fish darted through the reeds. Our kayaks quietly followed the shoreline. We drew a few smiles and some greetings as we glided by. We will sleep well, remembering the rhythms of paddle, boat, and lake.
