Jedediah Trails
All of Jedediah Island is a provincial park and trails link up the various landing points. Although we landed in Home Bay we could have landed at any of the camping spots to hike across the island, We first enjoyed the hike over to the former home of the island's owners, then we followed the trail through the orchard, the meadow, and through the old-growth forest to Long Bay and Deep Bay. Giant old douglas fir and cedar forest filled the north slopes and valleys. Arbutus trees stood on rocky bluffs. Tall grasses and sedges have filled in the meadows. There are no ponds on the island, but a little water occupies low meadows and gullies.
The trails follow the lowest points between rocky headlands, so we also followed the trail to Codfish Bay and then climbed a seldom-used single track to the top of the island. There are two high rocky bluffs, but the easternmost is higher. It is labeled as Gibraltar on the maps and is a superb hiking viewpoint. The route was steep, a little hard to follow, but offered views in every direction.
We did not expect to find hiking trails of this caliber in the middle of the Malaspina Strait. We were pleasantly surprised and delighted with a variety of routes and unique viewpoints. We want to return to explore more areas on the island. On our next trip, we think we should camp on Mother Goose Island and recite rhymes over a campfire…
