Red Plateau Loop
The Dewdrop Rim Trail on Red Plateau has long been my favorite trail of our area. But it is a long and demanding route, as noted in an earlier post (link). A much easier route is to drive up the Red Plateau Forest Service Road (on the Red Lake Road opposite the Pimple) and then follow double tracks to the rim of the escarpment.
From the Dewdrop Trail, we followed the route west past the turn-off to Castle Butte and over the next ridge, following a narrow single track with some flagging tape. Near the top of the next hill is a natural arch and many lava cliff features. Beyond that, the trail is faint, but flagging tape shows the way, staying close to the rim around gullies. The Kamloops Outdoor Club has blazed a route west which they call the Dewdrop Escarpment Trail. We came to a jutting viewpoint and we were surprised to find a bench and several memorials, but the site is at the end of an unmapped side road which we followed back and looped around to our turn-off starting point (at a BC Parks sign).
The route is a scenic, with minor hills along the route, ponds, rock features, and the wide views along the Dewdrop Escarpment. Some route-finding may be required so go with an experienced outdoors navigator and leave extra time. Look for my tent up on the ridgetop.
