Upper Grasslands Ramble
A favorite route starts at Lac du Bois and follows a dirt/grass double track south under the flank of Wheeler Mountain. Go through the gate on the east side of the lake. This now belongs to the Nature Conservancy of Canada but hiking and walking activities are permitted. Continue south as it winds through the upper grasslands.
The route passes a large pond which I call Green Pond. While you pass the shore on a sunny day, look deep into the lake for layers and shades of green. Wildflowers are in bloom from April through September. In June, there was larkspur, lemon weed, death camas, yarrow, vetch, cranesbill, gaillardia, peavine, pussytoes, and paintbrush. In the wetter spots in the trees, we could see shooting stars and arnica.
The route passes groves of aspens and some seasonal ponds, starting to dry out now.
Following the treed flank of Wheeler Mountain, the route crests a small pass, then starts a long, gradual descent toward the Pruden Pass Road. This route was the old wagon road from the Lac du Bois homesteads but now links into Lac du Bois Provincial Park.
As the route descends into the sagebrush, I usually turn around for an out-and-back route. The route is a 9km gentle quiet track. The subtle beauty of grasslands terrain, grassland birds, ponds, and wildflowers invite me back in each season.
