Boulder Trail
The main parking lot to access Okanagan Mountain Park from Kelowna is in an awkward spot. There is a good parking lot and a trail goes down to the beach below, but the routes into the park above climb quickly and wind up bluffs, through gullies, cross creeks, going up and down, without much reward. The Boulder Trail climbs up these bluffs, then descends down to cross Deeper Creek. At this time, the bridge is washed out and the creek has a lot of water, so a wet crossing is required. The trail above is also washed out up to the junction with the CN Trail. The next section is nice as it winds west up to a viewpoint.
This spot is worth the hike, but beyond the trail is barred by numerous windfall. So many burned trees fall each year and this area is one of the worst. Most of the trees are downed in gullies and beyond the gullies, the trail is wider and more pleasant. On the section labeled Wild Horse Canyon Trail, the route goes up and down, working its way south. At the creek junction with Good’s Basin, take a right turn if this is a day hike and come back by the lower route, which is a pleasant and wide track back down to Lakeshore Road. This loop requires a walk on the road back to the parking lot, but a swim at the beach below the parking lot is the reward at the end.
Can I recommend this trail? Not at this time. The Boulder Trail section is in poor shape. There are better routes to pick from until some work can be done in the park. Nonetheless, the lookout is a worthwhile spot for a future hike.
