Walk the Spine
If you just like to explore, the Valleyview Silt Cliffs are rich with ridges, gullies, sinkholes, and spines. The ridges come down from Juniper to the river valley and as they do, they narrow and become narrower as they descend to Valleyview. Some are just a narrow ridgetop, but most have a goat track on top of the spine. Hikers can go up the spine, follow the ridge towards Juniper, loop over on the east-west trail and come down another spine to Valleyview. On two recent explorations, we found 9 spines between Highland Drive and Tod Road. There are two clusters near the end of Valleyview Drive with the best access at the end of the Orchard Park area.
At times the route becomes precarious, so caution must be taken, but there is no rock in the area. A careful scrambler can negotiate the spine for the entire length, but it is not a route for anyone with acrophobia.
Along the loop, there are numerous sinkholes, some clay arches, coyote dens, and a few bike tracks. Lace up and walk the spine.
