Lyons Lake Link
The Lyons Lake trail is a pleasant forest walk along a double track on a fairly level route to a grasslands forest at the end of Sullivan Valley. On a winter day, I trudged along this path in wet conditions, enjoying the quiet of a gully track between hills.
The trailhead is near the Heffley Dump. Drive east towards Sun Peaks and watch the sign for the Heffley Dump turnoff (at N50 52.053 W120 13.220). As you approach the gate for the dump, turn right onto a good gravel road, which goes to the Heffley Gun Club. Watch for a side road going to the right, coming out of a gully (at N50 52.397 W120 12.805). Park off the side of the road just past the turn-off.
The track follows a gully on a gradual uphill through the forest. Ignore any side routes and continue NE towards Lyons Lake. When you are close to the lake, stay left. The track emerges from the forest at the side of Lyons Lake. Continue along the west shore of the lake. Beyond, you can see cattle gazing and there are gates about halfway along the lake. Turn around here and return by the same route.
Along the route, I spotted three deer and many birds. There are a number of erratics (glacial boulders) on the hillside. On an overcast day, the open grasslands of Sullivan Valley were a welcoming sight. The route is 7km return and worth a visit each year.
