West Opax
Opax Mountain lies north of Wheeler Mountain, in the area between McQueen Lake and Tranquille Canyon. There are 3 routes to the top, but our favorite has long been a hiking route from Lac du Bois to the top of the mountain. Park at Lac du Bois and hike the old road past the gate around the north side. Follow the track into a back valley. Continue along this road and watch for a fork in the road in Hanging Valley that veers north and uphill. Follow this switchback route as it climbs under the lava cliffs to the top of the mountain. Continue through the forest on top until a junction is reached (at about N50 47.714 W120 30.159). Turn left (west) and follow the double track all the way to the west edge of the mountain to look over Tranquille Canyon below.
Whenever we drive the Red Lake Road we look up at the lava cliffs on Opax and want to expore the area above. This hike takes you to that spot. Enjoy the rugged cliffs around the west rim of the mountain. Fall is a good time for this 15km round trip with the yellows, golds, and reds contrasting with the greens of the fir trees and the dark cliffs. Bring your camera.
