Trail Report: Tod Mountain
Now that the chairlift is open at Sun Peaks Resort, the weather is also warming up to melt the last of the lingering snow on the top of the mountain. The front (south) face of the mountain is mostly snow-free already, except for a few pockets here and there. The trails are a little wet, so boots make good sense. For the next two weeks, the lower trails are a better choice. Once at the top of the Crystal Bowl, snow awaits. Just over the top, the narrow valleys and north slopes still have 1-2 feet of snow. Hikers can usually stay on top, but every once in while, you will break through, so gaiters are recommended.
Hiking to the back of the mountain if possible. Since all of the south-facing and south-west-facing slopes are free of snow (but wet), take the West Ridge trail, to the foot of the peak, then stay on the south approach to the summit. Out and back is about 9km. The chair starts at 10:00 so leave enough time for a ride down the mountain too.
The first wildflowers are mouse-eared chickweed everywhere, then pasque flower at higher elevations, much of it peaking through the snow:
There were no mosquitoes on the mountain early on, but expect them to emerge with the warm weather. Dress for any weather, bring repellant. and a camera. Enjoy the best wildflower meadows west of Mount Revelstoke this summer.
