Chutes, Falls, and Lakes
There are numerous hikes off the Wells Gray Corridor road. Many are not destination hikes, but if you are comping in the area, there are rewarding routes. Two shorter hikes are featured here.
Bailey's Chute/West Lake Loop
The parking lot and trailhead for Bailey's Chute is well-signed. The first section follows the river upstream down through a wet zone (look for skunk cabbage and devil's club) to a viewing platform at Bailey's Chute. When the river is full, this steep ramp of water thunders down into foam right next to the viewing area. This is the terminus of the upstream migration of salmon. After being unable to go further upriver, salmon return back to the Horseshoe area to spawn.
The trail continues beyond Bailey's Chute. Friends of Wells Gary have constructed a 4km loop out to Marcus Falls, then Myanth Falls, back to West Lake, and back down to Bailey's Chute. the entire loop takes about 1.5 hours.
We really like this hike. It offers views of rapids, chutes, waterfalls, eddies, and ever-changing views of Clearwater River as well as a pleasant forest walk past a small lake,
