Trail Report: Geronimo-Sidewinder
The Stake Lake trails sytem between McConnell Lake and Lac lu Jeune has over 60km of forested trails for hikers and bikers. Most people park at Stake Lake and hike the north end of the trails, but it is also possible to start at ths south side and start near the campground or futher along the Forest Service Road to hike the SE trails. Take the road toward the campground but continue to go straight, turning up onto a dirt road. This road follows the south side of the lake to the end, then continues on to Fred Lakeand finally as a 4WD track to Ross Moore Lake. The road (brushed in red) is quite good to the Geronimo-Sidewinder junction shown below.
The Geronimo – Sidewinder loop is a 5.6 km loop on a double track on the forest. There are no viewpoints along the way, but the forest is quiet and wildflowers line the track.
An alternate 3 km loop with a viewpoint is to use the Ricochet-Lookout-Ambush Loop instead.
The trails were still fallry wet and boots are recommended. Moose tracks were fresh and bear sign was also seen. Bring bear spray and bug spray, but enjoy the easy hiking on good trails.
