Chuwhels Lake
Although the hike in to Chuwhels Lake is not a destination in itself, it is a good choice when combined with a short hike on the top of Greenstone Mountain. The drive to the top of Greenstone is 22km. Not too far from the top, watch for a signed turn-off towards Chuwhels Lake. Ignore the first road which is named Chuwhels Lake FSR. Go past this road to the next one. It is a narrow 4WD track that requires 4WD, but in the early season it is probably better to park and hike in. The double track is about 800m to the lakes edge and will require two stream crossings. The road emerges at the edge of an opening on the lake.
Fishermen or hunters will sometimes camp here. With open space at the lake’s edge, it is possible to spin cast from the shoreline. A trail follows the lakeshore to an old cabin.
A sign on the inside of the door states that the cabin is used for survival training. The view out front is perfect:
Return by the same route. If you go to the top of the mountain right now, wear boots. There is still lots of snow on top.
