Mara Scramble – Up the Ridge
Following the route described in Mara Scrambles (Mar. 31), the route continues upwards and is much easier, but still very rewarding. From the top of the front hill, it is an easy descent into Juniper Valley and a bit of a rocky climb up to the next hill. Stay left near the top of teh second hill. Beyond this hill, a narrow ridge continues to climb toward the last face of Mara. Just stay on top of the ridge.
All the way along, hoodoos, sculpted rock, and colored layers are seen on both sides. As you near the top of the ridge, the trail ends underneath the final face of Mara, but it is an easy traverse over to the Canyon trail to the east. This picture below is from above with the top of the ridge in the center and the canyon route in the treed gully to the left:
Hikers can return down the ridge, then down the Mara Scramble route or they can traverse (off-trail) to the Canyon Trail (east) and then down. This is one of the best hikes in our area and not to be missed.
