Mount Vicars
Mount Vicars sits above Scuitto Lake. There is no trail to the top, but hikers can get halfway up on double tracks, and the rest is a "route" among the rockbands.
To get to the parking area, drive along the Barnhartvale Road, then turn onto the Campbell Range Road. Continue straight up, and not far past the Robbins Range Road turn-off, turn right onto the Scuitto Lake Road. This route travels across a benchland and is heavily used by ATVs, dirt-bikes and 4WD drives. There are many trails to explore there too, especially near Tree Flats, but it is a noisy zone, so for a better hike, proceed beyond to Scuitto Lake, following a good gravel road.
As you emerge at Scuitto Lake, the road to the right goes past the lake towards Roche Lake on a rough backroad and has many side routes (this will be another post, including Scuitto Falls). The road to the left goes along the shore of Scuitto Lake where there is a BCFS Campground. For fishermen and paddlers, there are good spots to lauch a boat (another posting). This is probably the best place to park to hike Mount Vicars. The road continues to the Campbell Lake Campground.
Once you have parked, you can either walk back down the road to the obvious side road, or you can bushwack 100m to the track. Follow the track as it climbs and winds up the hill. At one point, you will need to bear off toward the top of the mountain. The forest is very open but you will need to wind between the rock bluffs. The upper part of the mountain is all rockbands and bluffs, but there is a good route up the hill at N 50 33.446, W120 08.825. It is a long diagonal gully pointing northwest if you don't have a GPS (you really should if you are doing off-track routes). Continue to wind your way among the bluffs up the mountain.
The top part of Mount Vicars is very interesting. it is all bedrock, granite, knolls, and outcrops. Once on top, there are fine views – Wild Horse Mountain and logged Scuitto Mountain to the west, Bestwick Hill and Buse to the east, Rose Hills, Pratt Hills, and Sunrise Mountain to the north, and the Monte Hills to the south. All of these have routes on them so as you try each one, you can look back to recognize Mount Vicars too.
Mount Vicars is a delight because it is an interesting scramble, but it is not for your novice hiking team. Wear good hiking boots and be prepared for off-trail route-finding.
There are a few motorbike tracks on the hill too, but none go up to the bluffs area.
Across Scuitto Lake with Mount Vicars behind.
