Upper Barnes Lake Trails
The hills bounded on 3 sides by Barnhartvale Road, the Campbell Range -Scuitto Road, and the Campbell Creek Road have a well-established trail system designed for non-motorized use. The Barnhartvale Horse and Hiker Trail Preservation Society has received funding and through its volunteer efforts has done a nice job on a good network of trails in grassland-sagebrush and forested terrain. The south end of the trails approaches the Tree Flats area off the Scuitto Lake Road, which is a heavily-used motorbike and quad area so hikers can venture beyond the Black Gate, but would face a different environment entirely. By doing a loop in the main trail system, though, hikers can get a 10km workout and will be unlikely to meet anyone along the way.
There has been no on-line map of this area up to now. The quality here is not yet good, so we will work on a better version over time.
Although there are 4 gates to the trails, the most convenient traliheads are opposite Gardiner Road or near Barnes Lake. Close all gates behind you. Give the right of way to horses. Enjoy the trails.
