Mount Fosthall
A hike into Monashee Provincial Park must be well-planned and good weather is important. It is a long drive, a long hike to Peters Lake, and a good climb to the top of Mount Fosthall. But, if the conditions, are right, this is a premier hike.
From Big Peters Lake, follow the (signed) trail to South Cariboo Pass, then continue up the ridge to the top of Fosthall. This is a climb of 1000m over 5.2 km. The route is straightforward, but it takes about 4 hours. I found some garnet seams along the ridge as I climbed to 8791 feet.
From the mountain there are spectacular views to the north including Slate Mountain, Mt. Odin, Mt. Thor, Nifleim, Cranberry Mountain, and a line of glaciers all the way to Mount Begbie. To the east the Arrow Lakes lie in the valley and the Slocan Ranges beyond. Return by the same route and enjoy a night at Peters Lake.
