Tunkwa Snowshoeing
The Tunkwa Lake area is well-suited to snowshoeing.
- the road in is kept plowed in winter
- the road to both campgrounds is well-used and there is plenty of parking
- the high-country open terrain means that snowshoers can bear off in any direction
- the terrain is flat by the lakes and gently rises through the grasslands to the west
- there are corridors through the forest heading west
We parked at the Tunkwa Lake campground and snowshoed west, but the Leighton Lake campground would also work well. There may be more snowmobiles and ATVs at the end of Leighton because of the staging area there.
When we snowshoed up the gentle slopes west of Tunkwa Lake, we were the first to set tracks into the meadows. This transition zone is protected from snowmobile and motorized use so we quietly made our way to the forest edge following the grassland "bays" and looping into the next open area in a wide arc back to the lake.
