JAG Hill
When you drive out to Tranquille, you look up to the northwest and the last hill of Red Plateau towers over the area. It would be a long climb up, but there is a much easier route to this wonderful viewpoint.
Pass Tranquille onto the Red Lake Road. Continue the climb past the switchback to the Dewdrop Range and continue to climb towards the Pimple (the pump hill overlooking Tranquille River) . Just past the Pimple, the Red Plateau Forest Service Road climbs to your left (west). Take this side road which climbs to the top of Red Plateau.
You can park and access the route to JAG Hill in several places:
- At a double track heading south at N 50° 46.428 W 120° 33.125
- At a double track heading southeast at N 50° 46.305 W 120° 32.901
- Or use the map and pick up the clear double track at any point in this general area
Follow the double track until it climbs a small hill. Before it descends steeply, leave the road and go across the top of the hill, which is really just a high point on the ridge. Continue along this same ridge as it rises and falls until you come to the last hill. There is no trail, but the forest here is open and the route is obvious. At the end of the ridge is the high point on an open, grassy hilltop, with 360 degree views.
This is an easy 2km ramble with little elevation change, but is very rewarding.
