Flourmill Volcanoes
This is a very remote spot in the NW corner of Wells Gray Provincial Park. There are two ways to get to the site and both involve a long drive on backroads. The Flourmills get very few visitors and most of them come in from 1oo Mile House via the Canim Lake Road, then the Spanish Lake FSR (Road # 7000) to Spanish Lake.
When I was last in to the Flourmills, we took a more adventurous route. The original route from Clearwater used to be drivable until the bridge over the Mahood River was lost. We chose to hike it.
This route is started by driving to Clearwater, then following the Clearwater River Road (on the west side) to the end of the road. There is a small camping area here popular with fishermen. This is also the starting point for the Sylvia and Goodwin Falls Trail and beyond to Mahood Lake. The other trailhead is across the river. We portaged the river in July in waist to chest deep water carrying our packsacks over our heads. This would not be possible in spring run-off, but it is manageable in later summer. Once on the other side, the old road is the start of a long hike. The track climbs up the ridge following the Clearwater River north past the Helmcken Canyon. As the trail/route approaches Flourmill Creek, a junction is reached. One fork goes north, but we turned west, continuing to climb through the forest following the general route of Flourmill Creek all the way to its headwaters near the volcanoes. The road goes right to two of the cones and there are two more cones to the north. This is a long hike so we chose to make camp along the route. We were very impressed with the cinder cones, an explosion pit, cross ropy lava flows, and craters. We climbed through one lava tube. All of our pictures were back in the days before digital cameras so there aren’t images to show, but this is a planned journey for the future.
