Opax Mountain from Hanging Valley
Opax Mountain lies northwest of Lac du Bois. It is a sprawling, forested hill with volcanic bluffs on various flanks, wet areas on the upper plateau, grass slopes on the west ridges overlooking Tranquille Canyon, logged areas, and a few viewpoints. There are loop opportunities, but they are not all that easy to follow. For a first visit, use an out-and-back route, carry a GPS if you have one (and turn on your tracking), travel with someone else, and leave enough time.
The Hanging Valley route is described here:
- Park at Lac du Bois. Follow the double track along the north shore.
- Continue through the back valley as it emerges into Hanging Valley.
- At the fork in the road, take the right fork (at N 50° 48.137 W 120° 28.522) . It will wind up the side of the mountain under lava cliffs.
- Once you are on top of the mountain, you could wander for hours and never link up the trails. For your first trip, follow pieces of a trail as it winds along the top of the bluffs eastward until you reach a viewpoint.
- My favorite viewpoint is at N 50° 48.153 W 120° 29.664 on an open ledge above the lava cliffs.
- For a first venture, return by the same route.
