Chuwhels Mountain
Chuwhels Mountain is a rounded ridge-shaped peak that sits between the Lac le Jeune Road and Greenstone Mountain. It can be accessed from every side, but the approaches from the south, west and north all require 4WD or snowmobile. The east side has good road access.
From the Lac le Jeune Road, the Chuwhels Mountain FSR starts directly across from the Stake Lake Parking lot. It travels east past Lodgepole Lake and then gradually ascends Chuwhels Mountain. This upper part of the road is not plowed in winter so this is really a summer-fall road. In the snow season, you can drive up as far as the road is plowed and then cross-country ski or snowshoe beyond. In the spring this road can be very muddy so wait until the melt and drying period is complete.
When the road is dry, you can drive all the way to the top, but the upper part of the road is rocky and rough. It is a very quiet road, so it is a pleasant hike or mountain bike to complete the trip without your vehicle. As you approach the top, the road splits into two and each option is about 1km of uphill to separate summits with separate communications towers. Both have good views of the neighbouring rounded slopes and plateaus filled with high-country lakes.
We have enjoyed this route in both winter and in late spring. Wildflowers are abundant in the spring and we have seen wildlife on every trip. In the winter, the route up and back is a long excursion so plan your trip accordingly.
