Upper Grasslands Walk
Start at Lac du Bois. Travel south along the double track. Go past an upland lake. A junction to the right climbs up the flank of Wheeler Mountain. Straight ahead takes you south under the forested slopes of Wheeler Mountain. There are a few fencelines, but cattle guards allow free access for the hiker or mountain biker. The fences are a legacy, part of the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s agreement with the land sale from Frolek Cattle Company and in consultation with Parks BC. You may see cattle grazing in the meadows. Upland ponds and marshes feature lots of ducks and birds, especially in the spring. After you have traveled along the path, the trail starts to descend down into the sagebrush as it works its way to Pruden Pass. We usually stop here, cross the fence and climb the hill to our east to stop for the view before returning the way we came. This is a must-do walk once a year.
