Clearwater River Trail
We didn’t have very good information on this trail, but thanks to Roland Neave’s book we had enough to find the trailhead and make some decisions along the way. We did make some wrong turns along the way and we made the trip longer than planned, covering 13km round trip, but we were very impressed with the route. There are excellent rivers views, two waterfalls, a long section under a lava bluff (very impressive), a beach, several canyons, and an interesting route. We hiked out to Osprey Viewpoint and above and returned. We really liked this hike and give it a big “thumbs-up.”
There are too many memorable views along the way:
- Go to the end of Dutch Lake Road and park. Follow the trail, but carry a copy of the map with you.
- Bring good boots. The route is a little rocky and rooty so ankle support and traction is valuable.
- A two-car route, starting at the top end is a nice option.
- There are lots of micro views along the way – rock features in the river, trees/vegetation/wildflowers, lava flows, and a number of surprises.
