Shaw Hill
Shaw Hill is another one of those wooded mountains which has no established hiking trails, but is still a good spot to go up for the exercise and the view. It sits in a unique location for views of Tod Mountain meadows, the Upper Louis Creek area and the Hyas Lake bowl. It can be approached from Hyas Lake or by a forest service road from the Heffley Lake area. If you have a good 4WD, you can get quite high on the mountain, using the backroads. Alternately, you can drive up to the same height as Hyas Lake and then walk or mountain bike up the old roads to a high shoulder just below the top of the mountain. The top of the mountain is heavily forested on one side and logged on the other so the better views are on the logged and reforested east side.
To get up Shaw Hill, drive past Heffley Lake heading toward Sun Peaks and turn onto the (signed) Lake Road. Follow this road until you come to a signed junction and turn onto the Armour Creek FSR. The road is manageable with 2WD although one section is a bit loose and requires some slow driving. You will see various side roads slitting off, but stay on the main road until an unsigned junction is reached (at N50 48.599 W119 59.802), at a fairly level area to the west of Shaw Hill. The route straight ahead goes into the lake chain, but is very rough. The route to the left winds up the north shoulder of Shaw Hill. You can park anywhere near here and hike (or bike) up, or you can climb in your vehicle and park wherever you see a spot. Return by the same route.
