Middle Mountain
This mountain has more than one name but we have always called it Middle Mountain. There are three distinct hilltops overlooking the west flank of Barnhartvale. The route in is good, but gets steeper as you climb upwards. The trail is clear most of the way, but is harder to follow near the top. It is a classic ridge climb with excellent views at every stage.
From Tod Road, turn up onto Ronde Lane and park at the end. Look for the start of a trail just above the driveway at the end of the road. Head north along a berm which aims at a small peninsular bluff with a lookout. Once at the lookout point, turn left up the ridge and follow the trail along the ridgeline all the way up. The last 200 metres is steep and you have to wind your way between rock bluffs to the top. Bear west a little bit at this point without dropping into the gully.
Once at the top, there are excellent 360 degree views. The other two hills are a fairly easy traverse but don’t really add much to the hike.
This is close to the City, but the steep terrain creates a sense of remoteness. We saw numerous bear and coyote signs. Wildflowers were out in April and continue through to July.
