Sun Peaks Nordic Trails
The Nordic Trails at Sun Peaks have been around a long time. The Kamloops Outdoor Club has a series of ungroomed trails between McGillivray Lake and Mount Morrisey and these are used by cross country skiers and snowshoers in the winter. Some of the trails are fine for summer hiking too, but many become overgrown or are wet. Similarly, Sun Peak’s network of trails are a nice alternative for walking, biking, and hiking once the snows have melted. Some remain wet for quite a while with puddles and swampy zones. Some are better than others. Over 6 hours of hiking I covered many of them and found the following trails to be good routes – Great Gray, McGillivray Lake Trail, Holy Smoke, Lynx Link, and the Little McGillivray Lake route. Just about all of the trails north of McGillivray Lake Trail were wet and buggy. Attached is a map and I would recommend sticking to the main 3 trails until late in summer. The destination can be one or both of the two lakes (an 8km loop) or Mount Morrisey. Bring bug spray until August and good hiking boots for wet areas. When the valleys become too hot, this is a nice alternative for area hikers.
